It is recommended that one spend 5 to 7 days in Athens and Santorini, which provides adequate time to pursue an interesting historical sightseeing experience and time to be in a relaxed picture picture-postcard-like nature of the islands.

2-3 days in Athens: This period will be sufficient to see the key historical places of interest, such as the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Ancient Agora, walk around such neighborhoods as Plaka and Monastiraki, and eat local food. There is also an option of visiting museums and absorbing the atmosphere of a big city.

In Santorini: 3-4 days. It gives an opportunity to visit alluring towns like Oia and Fira and enjoy the legendary sunset, spend time at beaches, such as Kamari or Red Beach, and go on a caldera cruise. Other activities that you may undertake are visiting the archaeological location of Akrotiri or enjoying the calm scenery of the island.

Then 7 to 10 days would be better, in case you are covering Mykonos or other close destinations. Still, the journeys to Athens and Santorini will be a pleasant experience with a slow pace, requiring only 5 to 7 days.
