The festive period truly is the most wonderful time of the year, and we're about to show you exactly why that is! If you’re a fan of all things Christmas and fancy a festive change from the usual, then we recommend spending an afternoon or two at the fabulous Christmas Markets in Berlin and Amsterdam. Wrap up warm, relish in the festive festivities, browse an abundance of market stalls offering traditional homemade crafts, gorge on gingerbread, mulled wine and all things sweet, all the while jingling along to some of your favourite Christmas classics. Whatever you get up to, you’re sure to dash, dance and prance your way to a Christmas market stay!
When you think of Amsterdam your mind probably conjures up visions of pretty canals lined by towering town houses, and while there’s certainly plenty of that to be found, the city has much more to discover. Take a boat tour out onto Amsterdam’s waterways, learn about its fascinating history and see the city from a different vantage point. The Anne Frank House provides a sobering but captivating experience which tells the story of the Frank family and their plight whilst the city was under Nazi occupation in the 1930s and 40s. In the south of the city you will find Vondelpark and its swathes of luscious greenery, the perfect place for a cycle ride or afternoon stroll. Many of the city’s fabulous museums and galleries can also be found here, including the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are located around the aptly named Museumplein. Both are must-sees for any art lovers and artists! At night, the city comes alive as its vibrant bar and nightclub scene kicks into action. Chill out with a pint of Dutch beer in hand in one of the huge city centre plazas or don your dancing shoes for a night of heavy beats in the dance music capital!
Berlin has been a hotbed of profound events over the last century and it can be seen in every building, street and gallery. The mighty Brandenburg Gate is one of Berlin’s most well-known structures, having stood since 1791 and passing through WWII with only a few blemishes. For those interested in the War, the Holocaust Memorial and the Soviet Memorial at Treptower Park offer poignant sights that are sure to stick with you long after. For a more colourful slice of history (literally), check out the East Side Gallery and its provocative political artworks. Not all of Berlin’s draws are found in the past; the city is legendary for offering some of the best nightlife in the world. With a sprawling club scene that encompasses the breadth of the city, if you like life loud then you’ll find plenty of places that keep the music going till the early morning. The Watergate represents the classic techno sounds of Berlin, whilst SO36 is home to rock and indie. For something mellower, A Trane offers small, intimate jazz performances. Whatever takes your fancy, Berlin has it!
