The hotel was built in 1909. 131 double rooms are located on 7 storeys and can be reached by lift. The friendly staff at the reception desk are happy to answer any questions. Amenities include a cloakroom, baggage storage service, safe and cash machine. Wireless internet access (for a fee) allows guests to stay connected while on holiday. The hotel offers various facilities for guests with disabilities. The hotel has wheelchair-accessible facilities. There are a number of shops as well. Additional facilities include a playroom. Guests arriving by car can park their vehicles in the car park for a fee. Further services and facilities include a 24-hour security service, a babysitting service, a transfer service, 24-hour room service, a laundry service and a coin-operated laundry. Design hotels are advertised and priced as if they were premium. The opposite is true here. This hotel is immersed in the worst corner of San Francisco, which is terribly unpleasant as an average business tourist and probably dangerous with children or women. Nothing inside (rooms, service) compensate for the overall location. Also no meaningful Marriott benefits. I would not recommend anyone to stay here.

I didn’t stay here but, when there was a shooting up the street they let me chill with them until I felt safe enough to leave. They have awesome staff and would recommend anyone wanting to stay here. 10/10 people

Beautifully designed and nice amenities. The room is posh though small. Staff are great. But also, the front desk is hard to reach. The Proper Hotel has become my work home away from home in San Francisco. My work brings me to the city every month, and I consistently choose to stay here because of the extraordinary people who make every visit feel welcoming and effortless.From the front desk team to security, restaurant staff, housekeeping, and concierge services, every interaction is marked by genuine warmth, professionalism, and responsiveness. Whether I need extra towels, soap, assistance with reservations, or help navigating the city, requests are handled immediately and graciously.What truly sets the Proper apart is that exceptional service isn’t limited to one department—it is woven throughout the entire hotel. Every staff member seems committed to ensuring guests feel cared for and valued.Beyond the service, what makes the hotel special is its design, attention to detail, and sense of comfort. The Proper feels like much more than a place to sleep. It is a place where I genuinely enjoy spending time—whether relaxing between meetings, meeting colleagues and friends, or simply enjoying the atmosphere. Few hotels manage to feel both sophisticated and welcoming; the Proper does.The hotel itself is beautiful, and the rooftop bar is outstanding. The location is in a part of San Francisco that reflects many of the challenges facing the city, including its housing crisis. Wonderful stay. The staff is so helpful. Beautiful room. Easy to get some work done and relax. Convenient location for an event at the Asian Art Museum in the evening and for a good 2+ mi run to Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf plus walk to the Maritime Museum, Ghiradelli Square, and up to Lombard Av.
