We really liked it here, fairly centrally located and characterful, with really friendly staff. We arrived to check in and the room wasn't quite ready due to a recently departed large group; the accomodating receptionist arranged coffee while we waited and the room was ultimately very pleasant. Recommended 👍.
Obsessed with their own refund policy! I arranged to have an IBAN transfer made to this hotel for the entire month of October, well in advance of my scheduled arrival in Riga on October 1st. However, the general manager refused to accept this cash transfer unless I provided credit card details as well. This demand was apparently in keeping with their refund policy. I saw no need to add credit card detail information when the entire transaction would have been in cash and completed well prior to my arrival. Her subsequent emails to me demanding credit card info to meet their refund policy were filled with an increasing plethora of (unexplained) exclamation marks. Obviously this lady has zero interest-personal skills. Her final coup de grâce was in her last email to me in which she told me not to worry because ‘there will be no reservations for you.’ Such arrogance! Does she really think the Hanza Hotel is the only hotel in Riga? Having now actually seen this hotel in person, I can understand why the general manager is so obsessed with a refund policy. One look at this place, bordering on being a dump, in its run-down, somewhat creepy, neighbourhood, and I expect most people would demand an immediate refund and leave faster than a speeding bullet! Basically, this place is out in the boonies, compared to a host of other hotels much, much closer to the Old Town. The only nearby tourist attraction to the Hanza is the Latvian Academy of Sciences Observation Deck. Attractions in the Old Town are at least a 25-minute walk away. Add on another 10-15 minutes for trying to navigate through extensive road construction complete with ear-splitting noise and clouds of grime and grit. The consequence of the general manager’s last email to me was that I was able to stay at a real hotel in Riga, where business acumen is combined with common sense and where courtesy and comfort prevail.
I stayed here for 3 nights with my friend. We were really happy with everything- the room, staff and also the breakfast were really tasty. We had a beautiful view from our hotel room. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it if you’re planning on visiting Riga.
The hotel is well located but there were significant road and site works around the central rail station making on foot commuting a little harder, that said walk through the central markets to the middle of old town easily. The room was small but clean and comfortable, breakfast was sufficient and the staff were helpful and friendly.
The hotel, for the price, is great value. If you want somewhere clean and no fancy frills then this is ideal. We were in the room to change and sleep … if that’s what you need then this is perfect. Easy to get to from the 22 bus and in a safe area. A 20 min walk into the main part but plenty of buses if you wanted to avoid the extra steps. Breakfast was basic and perhaps not to everyone’s taste but enough to start the day off.
