Good beach Hotel
The hotel is located in a great place, you can walk into the centre of Funchal in about 20 minutes or you can get a bus from just outside the hotel. The sea front view is just incredible, we had a garden and sea view room. The view from the pool is amazing, especially with the access to the sea. There looks to be two accessible points however one was shut, perhaps this is for boats only. With regards to the pools, they were super clean and the beds were always tidy. I think however that style could be improved, looking over the infinity pool when you are in it, you end up looking at an ugly ring fence barrier, which could be improved. They could have a few more sunbeds as well. The pool was so quiet during the day which was lovely if you wanted some peace, there was barely anyone there. Dinner time was busier, however you could always get a table outside on the balcony and the staff asked you where you wanted to sit. The room was super clean and had a mini fridge. Our shower was absolutely pants though. The main shower head was a trickle of water that wouldn't stay the same temperature, there was another shower head attached about waist height - which was a bit silly anyway, would have been much better to attach it same height as the other one - but this shower head was really much too hard and felt like you were getting scratched. So in the end we had to try to shower sat down. This was super annoying. There was also no plug socket next to a mirror so if you’re trying to use hair straighteners or your own hairdryer that presents a challenge. Other than that, the room was everything we needed. It had a TV, hairdryer, lockable safe, wardrobe etc, and you are given towels for the pool. The service was OK. Most of the staff seemed languid and were not very friendly however there was one woman who was very friendly and helped us to book for car rental. The food was awesome. Presented beautifully, great tasting, lots to choose from and kept clean. The restaurant staff kept the restaurant very clean, they were on it with plate clearing. I think overall the hotel was very good; it was quiet , food and location were great, however it was quite a high price for what you actually get and I think in comparison to other hotels in the area, so I would be picking somewhere else next time.
We stayed for 7 nights at the Vidamar Hotel whilst on a TUI holiday. Everything met our expectations. The view from our room was spectacular, the reception staff were cheerful, informative and knowledgeable and the food was delicious. The restaurant was large but we always found a table on the covered balcony and found the waiters helpful and friendly. The food was varied, beautifully presented and we looked forward each day to our meals. There is a nearby bus stop for transport to Funchal (€2 in 2024) but walking into central Funchal only takes half an hour. We hope to make another visit and could wholeheartedly recommend the Vidamar Hotel.
Luxury hotel. We had a great time here. Everyone from reception and throughout are very professional and courteous. Excellent WIFI throughout. Free parking It was my husbands birthday whilst we were here and we were very touched that someone had obviously taken notice of the dates of birth on check in or seen the cards in the room, and kindly arranged for a cake , card, and bottle of fizz which was waiting for us in the room when we got back that afternoon. It made his day very special!! The room we had was a junior suite and looked very swish. It had a comfy chair area and everywhere was modern and clean. We could have done with more drawer storage as the bedside table was made to look like a packing case, so although it looked terrific, there was nowhere to put things out of the way. The wardrobes were transparent and formed the dividing wall between the bed and the sleeping area. The bedroom was light and airy as a result, but it was just as well we keep a tidy wardrobe! Shower room, again, scrupulously clean. We appreciated the robes and slippers. Again, we could have done with more storage to put our toiletries away. We arranged tables at the 2 speciality restaurants near to the hotel ( one of them visited twice), which were very good and made a nice change if we fancied being served rather than the buffet service. The buffet service was also excellent with a great range of dishes, all delicious. There was always a selection of soup, and good range of salad items. Cooked items varied each day, often shellfish, prawns, mussels, paella etc and always a type of casserole dish such as beef stew or a brazillian chilli type dish, so we were never bored. Good selection of cheeses with dried fruits etc. Special shout out to the pastry chef. The desserts not only looked delicious but actually were delicious! Professionally made with quality ingredients, no shortcuts here! Dangerously more-ish. The breakfast selection was very good with cereals, fruit, pastries plus full cooked selection for those who wanted it. Porridge available every day too. Efficient toaster. Along with juices, we noticed that sparkling wine was also offered with breakfast! The bar was great too...I tried the poncha here and also good choice of madeira as part of a full bar. Entertainment 4 days per week 9 till 11. Pool area very good, comfortable sun loungers. Towels provided freely so this was never stressful. The towels were actually the right size and shape which was great, longer and narrower than typically available. There has obviously been a great deal of attention given to the design in the hotel. Mostly this has paid off! Nothing was too much trouble here, and when we had an early departure before breakfast started we asked if an early breakfast was available. This was cheerfully accommodated and a continental breakfast was laid out for us , bread ( and toaster), cheese ham tea and coffee and croissants. Overall we had a great time here and would be happy to recommend the hotel to our friends.
I am going to break this review down into sections , so you can skip if a section if you wish. First impressions. When you arrive you are treated by immaculately tendered Gardens and spotlessly clean exterior and interior reception areas. 5/5 Staff welcome. Nothing short of first class , absolutely lovely welcome from the reception team , seemed really interested in welcoming us and enquiring how our journey had been. This also continued throughout our stay with any queries . They also arranged a birthday treat for me when they spotted my birthday from my passport ( bottle of bubbly , birthday cake and birthday card ) this was totally unexpected and gotta say such a nice touch. 5/5 Room. The room smelt unbelievably clean when we entered , not sterile like a hospital but a pleasant smell , everything was spotless and well appointed , fresh clean towels, robes , absolutely tons of drawers and storage spaces , easy to use safe you can programme your own pin number and mini fridge. Balcony with chairs and little table . and upon entry we had a complimentary bottle of house red ( which was so nice we continued drinking that brand all through the holiday and we can recommend the red , white and rose ) . The bed is absolutely huge and at 6ft 10 tall , boy did I appreciate that ! Facilities. Stunning ....and indoor / outdoor pool heated to a nice temperature and then 3 outdoor salt water infinity pools which are cooler but I imagine in August are awesome. Plenty of comfortable sunloungers and also a beach towel exchange with 2 really friendly pool attendants and lifeguards , always really friendly . Gym , squash courts . Everywhere is immaculate. Lisbon bar is nice. Pool bar . Really helpful and friendly attentive staff . Evelyn and Fabio are to be commended by their managers as they went above and beyond to make sure we always had drinks when we needed ( but they Aren't pushy ) you can charge to your room with a signature so saves cash or cards being carried around. They really deserve a special mention as they were excellent. The pool bar does a fantastic selection of drinks and also snacks and wonderful lunches Restaurant. Quite simply .....Reading some other reviews I don't get it ....if you can't find anything to eat here you might as well just go home... The food selection is rotated daily and there is always such choice of meats , fish and even some vegan options. The individual stations are awesome..from hot / salad/ breads / desert and Ice cream station / cheese selection/ fresh fruit stations too. In the breakfast you even have bottles of bubbly fizz in ice buckets you can help yourself too, or make bucks fizz from . Really , the food is top quality and plentiful . Eating outside on the terrace is lovely . There are 2 Al a carte restaurants included in your allowance and the one that does wood fired skewered meat is exceptional. The best steak I've had in years To summarise: JUST BOOK THIS PLACE - YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED
The view from the premium rooms in 10th floor is just stunning. The direct access to the ocean is a huuuuge plus! The buffet was good - the coffee can be better. Already looking to book another trip to Madeira this year and will definitely be staying at Vidamar.
